Windshield wipers are among the most important active safety elements of any car. That’s why you should make sure that they always work for 100%. What basic parts are they made of and how do you know when they need to be replaced? We bring you an overview of the most important facts you should know.
Basic parts of wipers
Windshield wipers consist of 4 basic parts – a mechanism with a power drive, a wiper arm and the wiper itself with a wiper blade. Most cars use 2 wipers to wipe the windshield, but there are also models that only have 1 larger wiper.
The wiper mechanism consists of an electric motor and several smaller connecting parts that ensure proper operation. The arm is usually made of metal or plastic. Its task is to hold the wiper blade and move it along the surface of the glass. The bar itself consists of high-quality rubber material. Along its entire length, it must fit perfectly against the windshield in order to be able to effectively remove drops of water and dirt.
When to replace wipers with new ones?
Changing the wipers normally means changing the rubber wiper blade. The arms and components of the mechanism have long lifespan and on many cars they do not need to be changed even after more than 15 years and 300,000 kilometers. The reason for the replacement can only be a failure of the motor, corrosion or other mechanical damage to the parts.
Traces of water on the glass
If you turn on the wipers during rain and there are left lines or other traces of water in the field of vision, this is a sign that the wiper blades are already cracked and should be replaced with new ones.
Practical tip: Visually check the condition of the wiper blades once in a while. Lift both wipers and see if the rubber is torn in some places. This is probably the easiest way to find out if they need to be replaced with new ones.
Tearing and rattling
The wipers must slide smoothly across the windshield like knife through butter. If they visibly tear or rattle, this is a sign that the rubber of the wiper blade is already excessively worn.
Autumn: The ideal time to replace the wipers
The best time to replace wipers is the beginning of autumn. During the summer, wiper blades are exposed to extreme temperatures, as a result of which they tend to harden slightly and no longer have their ideal properties.
Since fall and winter are the rainiest seasons, you should have your windshield wipers 100% ready to see the road perfectly every time you drive.
A wide selection of quality wipers
When buying new wipers, invest in quality. The cheapest off-brand wiper blades usually stop working properly after just a few weeks.
In our offer you will find a wide selection of universal wipers with FLAT technology, thanks to which they fit exactly to the glass, while wiping extremely quietly and efficiently. There are 14 size versions available, so you are sure to find one that fits your car exactly. Easy installation is also an advantage.
Liquid wipers as a practical helper not only in the rain
In autumn, winter and spring, you will definitely appreciate liquid wipers, which naturally repel water and minimize the formation of ice. When driving at a higher speed, the water droplets aggregate into larger particles that flow off the windshield on their own, giving you a great view and you don’t have to use the classic wipers as often.
A great choice for example is the DXG2 – RAIN-OFF 500 ML, which just needs to be applied to the glass every 2 months. Can also be used on side windows. You will feel its advantage even in the summer – not so many insects and dirt will stick to the windshield.
Final advice: You can also support the life of the wipers and the efficiency of wiping with a quality windscreen washer fluid.
